Fuller-Week One

I am in the middle of the first week of my master’s degree.  I figured I would give a brief update, especially since I have really slowed down with the blogging.

The first week has been really great.  The focus has been on getting to know the other members of the cohort.  There are 20-25 people in the cohort.  It is an amazingly diverse group.  Church planters, pastors, missionaries, camp directors, presidents of organization.  From countries including, the states, Costa Rica, Columbia, Australia, Switzerland, Russia, England, and many others.  I am humbled and honored to be in this group.

Overtime I will keep you all up to date on this new adventure.  God bless and have a great day.

Church Marketing?

Every so often I hear about churches marketing themselves like businesses.  Even though I have a business mind and training, this is a discussion to be had at a different time.

Dean Lusk, worship leader at Wall Highway Baptist Church in Madison, Ala., was recently working on a new slogan for the church when inspiration struck: “I originally thought of this as a ‘Top 10 Rejected Church Slogans’ project, but I only got to seven of them before life happened and I got back to work.”

These are just two of his slogans:

I am sure these would work great, especially in little ole Marshall.

Momentum at Family Bible Church

The last two weeks have been a great challenge but very rewarding at the same time.

I have noticed a trend in life that it is really easy to focus on something that may be troubling you, and this overshadows some amazing things that God is doing right in front of us.

Today I wanted to share some things that I am really excited about that is happening in and through the ministry at Family Bible Church.

* We had 22 people go through the membership with a desire to join the church

* Last week in our AM service we had 323 people worship with us

* Creation Kingdom has had an amazing impact on the lives of our children (see other post)

* The church has stepped out in faith in many different areas (land, staff, reach into the lives of others, etc)

* God is moving and blessing the church in many different ways, some ways that we cannot completely see right now

* There is a general excitement about the vision to reach and develop people

* Our church functions and grows as a multi-generational church, I have received many complements about this.

* We are reaching the group of people who are most commonly missing from church, the twenty somethings. The fastest growing age group at FBC is the twenty somethings (according to Barna Research Group only 3 out of 10 people in this age group weekly attend church)

* Lives are being changed and challenged on a weekly basis both here and through those who call FBC home.

There are great things happening here. I hope and pray that you are deeply plugging in to ministry and joining the work that the Lord is doing!

I Was Kidnapped…

A few Friday’s ago Joanna and I had our new youth pastor and wife, Mario and Mary, over for dinner.  I thought that we would have a nice quiet night to hangout.  I was wrong.

After dinner Joanna asked me to go out to my car to get her phone.  So being the good husband I am, I went out and found it.  As I was getting out of the car someone grabbed me and told me that I was going with them…

I looked back and saw two other guys standing there…

It was Ben McFadden, Shane Smith, and Nate Burns, two youth group members and a leader.  I knew what was happening, it was like Freshmen Orientation for Mario and I.  Mario eventually was pushed out of the house because Mary and Joanna were in on the deal.   He on the other hand, did not know what is happening.

After being blindfolded and driven to the church.  We were placed before a bank of lights and a group of kids who each asked us questions.

The rest of the night was a great time.  The youth used it as a night to say thank you to me and as a welcome for Mario.  We had a scavenger hunt, Bible trivia, hot sauce challenge (which I felt sick the next day), and ended up the night playing Aliens.

It was a great night and we do have the best youth and youth leaders here at FBC.

Below are a few more pictures from the night.

Creation Kingdom, You Have to See It

(This post is from the FBC March newsletter)

Have you ever said it? Have you ever heard it? I often find myself laughing quietly when someone is sharing about their life and they say the phrase, “I grew up in the church.” A common phrase in our language, but the voice in my head shouts out, “Well that is odd, I grew up in a house!” I know; it is a bit childish.

I grew up in the church. As a child, I found church foreign and distant to anything that was happening in my young mind. It was as if as an elementary school student, I was thrust into high school or college academia.

As my childhood years passed, I learned how to read a hymnal, close my eyes when we prayed, and there were a few Sunday’s where I really did try to learn something from the pastor. Often I would do anything as a child to occupy my mind including drawing, playing quiet games, or thinking about the fact that I was going to Burger King after church; if I was good. I grew up in the church, but I never grew up in my faith, in the church.

Over the past few months I have slipped out of the morning worship service to join Creation Kingdom for a few minutes in the youth room. Each time I watch the children in Creation Kingdom tears well up in my eyes. I have watched them worship, pray, give offerings, memorize scripture and learn what it means to have a relationship with Jesus. I am moved by the fact that they are not only growing up in church they are growing up in their faith, in the church.

Our vision here at Family Bible Church is “Reaching as many as possible; developing fully committed followers of Christ.” In EVERY ministry we need to examine how we can best REACH and DEVELOP people, young and old.

Months ago, a door opened in the children’s ministry to intentionally dream up and design Creation Kingdom to reach and develop children. Dawn Iott and her team of faithful dedicated leaders including her husband Chris, Stacey and Bryan Meister, Bryan Kidder, Kay Bean, junior highers Kristina Craft and Alex Mansfield plus many others teachers and leaders took on this task and have done an amazing job ministering to these children.

These leaders pour their time, energy and resources into this program. They do not do this for any other reason then to create an environment of learning and expression toward Jesus Christ. This is something that I personally did not have as a child.

Last Sunday I overheard a child talking with great excitement about Creation Kingdom. He looked at his friend and said that this was a great place to invite his friends to learn and hear about God. He has been growing up in his faith at church.

Experience Creation Kingdom.

Watch as the children sing out the words to all sorts of songs; hymns, worship, and fun songs. They are growing up in their faith at church.

Listen to the excitement in the voices of children as share about what they learn. They are growing up in their faith at church.

Watch the children give a gift as an offering to the Lord. They are growing up in their faith at church.

Listen as the children memorize a verse each week. They are growing up in their faith at church.

Ask the leaders of Creation Kingdom what they have experienced in this ministry. I am sure that you will be blessed as you hear about what the Lord is doing in the lives of the children at Family Bible Church.

Jesus rebuked those in the Bible who stood in the way of the children coming to Him. In Matthew 19:14 He said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

My Sunday mornings as a child were by no means horrific, but they lacked. When I look at Creation Kingdom I see a ministry that is alive and full of excitement for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I am honored to serve in a church where energy and resources are poured out into children’s ministry where kids do not only grow up in the church they grow up in their faith.
